Kindness Is Not About Being Nice

The power of systemic kindness within organizations through regenerative leadership

Kindness Is Not About Being Nice

“An organization can be extremely polite and, at the same time, be profoundly violent.”

Think about that.

People can say “please.”

They can hold meetings about mental health.

They can talk about empathy.

They can include “respect” among the company values.

And fear can still exist.

Fear of disagreeing.

Fear of making mistakes.

Fear of saying no.

Fear of delivering bad news.

So perhaps we need to revisit what we understand by kindness.

Because kindness is not simply a quality of individual behavior.

It is a quality of the relationship.

And, above all, of the structure that sustains that relationship.

A leader can be extremely kind in their words and still produce deeply hostile environments.

Because the question is not only:

“How do I treat people?”

The question is:

“What kind of behavior does the system I lead need to produce in order to keep functioning?”

If people need to hide mistakes in order to survive...

If they need to compete with one another to be recognized...

If they need to burn out to prove commitment...

If they need to silence what they perceive so as not to contradict those in power...

Something is wrong with the architecture of the system.

This is where what I call systemic kindness comes in.

It is not about being nice.

It is not about avoiding difficult conversations.

It is not about giving up on performance.

It is about building relationships in which truth can flow freely without dignity having to be sacrificed.

Because conflict can be healthy.

Boundaries can be loving.

Accountability can be firm.

And a difficult conversation can be far kinder than a silence that perpetuates a problem.

Perhaps a leader’s true kindness does not lie in making everything more comfortable.

But in creating the conditions for people to remain human while doing difficult things.

Because a system is not regenerative simply when it stops causing harm.

It becomes regenerative when it begins to generate life.
