The end of "buy from me" and the rise of "when you buy, fulfill your purpose"

Have you ever noticed that the brands you admire most are no longer just trying to sell you a product or service? They stand for a cause. They have values. They seem, genuinely, human. Increasingly, consumers want to buy from companies that are aligned with their own values and purposes and that meet certain ethical and socio-environmental standards.

This is no coincidence. It is what Philip Kotler called Marketing 3.0: the era in which companies stop focusing solely on the product or the consumer, and begin treating people as complete human beings — with mind, body, and spirit.

In today's landscape, consumers don't just buy what you do, but why you do it. And the Brazilian technology and innovation market is full of great examples of companies that understood how purpose generates billions in value.

Marketing 3.0 in Brazilian practice

Look at Brazil's startup ecosystem. The brands that reached the top didn't win simply by having the best technology — they won by embracing a human cause:

  • Nubank: It wasn't born just to be a purple credit card; it was born to fight abusive bureaucracy and give people back control of their financial lives.
  • Wellhub (formerly Gympass): It doesn't sell gym passes; it sells quality of life, mental health, and the fight against a sedentary lifestyle in the corporate environment.
  • Buser: It's not just a travel app; it's a banner for democratizing transportation and the right to travel at a fair price.

These companies understood that Marketing 3.0 is not about "doing charity" to look good. It's about aligning the business model with real transformation in society.

How to apply Marketing 3.0 to your business today?

If you want your brand or personal project to thrive in this era, the path begins with three pillars:

  1. Discover your cause: What wound in the market or in society does your product heal? If your company disappeared tomorrow, what would the world lose (beyond the product itself)?
  2. Be transparent and ethical: In Marketing 3.0, consistency between what you say and what you do is everything. Engaged communities are built on mutual trust.
  3. Treat customers as partners: Involve your audience in your mission. Turn customers into advocates within a community that shares your values.

I first encountered this concept during my master's degree at the University of Barcelona in 2019, and one example that had a profound impact on me was TOMS Shoes — a revolutionary concept that took the world by storm with the "One for One" model. Their premise is simple: for every pair of shoes a customer buys, the company automatically donates a brand-new pair to a child living in extreme vulnerability who has no footwear. Think about it: the customer solves a problem by making a purchase, the company earns a profit, and the customer has the assurance that a child on the other side of the world, in a country of extreme poverty, benefits as a result.

Sustainable profit is no longer an isolated primary goal; it has become the natural outcome of a well-executed purpose.

What about you? What cause drives your work or your company today? Have you ever considered that a greater purpose could boost your sales? That you can turn something ordinary into something that impacts and transforms the lives of many?
