Do you know the fastest way to get a promotion? The secret may lie in "promoting" your boss.

Do you know the fastest way to get a promotion? The secret may lie in "promoting" your boss.

In my first year of business school, my General Management professor asked a simple question: "Do you want to get promoted?"

The obvious answer was yes. His advice changed my outlook: "The easiest way to move up is to promote your boss."

In other words: help your manager deliver outstanding results, become their right-hand person, and build a genuine partnership. If they move up or switch companies, the chances of taking your career along for the ride are enormous.

Throughout my own career, I experienced this kind of partnership firsthand. I was able to support my managers in achieving results, and in return, they became the greatest drivers of my professional growth.

But what is it that prevents so many professionals from building this kind of partnership? Why do so many prefer to change jobs instead?

The real diagnosis: it is rarely a lack of recognition in itself. The chronic mistake lies in a lack of assertive communication.

Leaders and their direct reports often don't speak the same language. To help my coachees address this, I apply a concept from NLP: Representational Systems.

Here is a real case of cognitive noise:

One of my coachees led the marketing department of a large company and struggled to communicate with his Japanese-born director. The boss was extremely reflective; the employee was fast-paced and action-oriented.

By analyzing both profiles, we uncovered the root of the problem:
• The employee was Visual: he thought fast, gestured frequently, and focused on the aesthetics of his slides.
• The boss was Digital: focused on concrete data, structured logic, and rational decision-making.

The mistake? The coachee was trying to sell ideas using his own style. He needed to adapt to his boss's channel.

Once he became aware of this, he changed his approach: he cut back on visual embellishments, brought reports with statistical data, and respected the Director's need for reflection time.

The result? His ideas began to get approved, he became highly valued, and he earned the long-awaited promotion.

How does your boss process information? Identify their profile:

👁️ Visual: Speaks quickly, gestures a lot. Uses phrases like "see what I mean", "look at this perspective", or "it's clear".
👂 Auditory: Has a measured rhythm, focuses on tone and intonation. Uses expressions like "I've heard that", "that sounds right".
🤝 Kinesthetic: Calm movements, values eye contact. Uses words like "feel", "grasp the idea", "impact".
📊 Digital/Logical: Focused on analysis and processes. Uses terms like "facts", "data", "logic", and "structure".

Practical strategy for your next meeting:

For visual bosses: Prioritize charts, mind maps, and one-page summaries.
For auditory bosses: Do a quick verbal alignment before sending lengthy reports.
For kinesthetic bosses: Focus on the practical impact on people and team morale.
For digital bosses: Leave guesswork behind. Present spreadsheets, timelines, ROI data, and result justifications.

Adapting your communication to someone else's channel is not about erasing who you are. It is about having the strategic intelligence to ensure that your competence is truly understood.

Promoting your manager's success is, ultimately, paving your own path forward.
