Have You Ever Had to Make Personal Sacrifices to Invest in Your Career?
My wife, on the other hand, had to put her career on hold, as she would not be able to practice her profession during my expatriate assignment. She supported my decision, navigating first-time motherhood far from the support of family and friends, while also having to adapt to a new culture. Loneliness and uncertainty were ever-present, but one of the factors that helped us enormously was our church. We are Presbyterians, and as soon as we arrived, the local community welcomed us warmly and became our new family. These friends became a vital source of emotional support and were instrumental in helping us adjust.
I remember our first Christmas in Mexico, which, due to the time difference, arrived three hours earlier than in Brazil. We were home alone — just me, Carol, and Lucas. At that moment, the biggest question was whether we had made the right decision. As time went on, we realized that this experience had strengthened us as a family. We learned to overcome challenges together, which made us more resilient and brought us closer as a couple. That is why every professional achievement I had, I made a point of celebrating with her and always acknowledging that it was a shared victory, since the sacrifice was a joint one in pursuit of our personal goals.
This journey also made me a stronger executive. I became more well-rounded, learned to embrace and value diversity in people, and developed a deeper understanding of other cultures and their approaches to achieving results. We gained a new family and expanded our cultural horizons, forging friendships we maintain to this day. Mexico became a country we love, and that experience shaped us in ways we never thought possible.
I now understand that personal sacrifices are often necessary when you have a clear sense of purpose. The balance between professional and personal life is essential; success in one area should reflect positively on the other. The key is to find an equilibrium that benefits both your career and your family life.
This lesson extends to other areas of life. Sacrifices, when made with intention and clarity of purpose, can open doors and foster growth that we would not otherwise experience. So, looking back, I believe it is always worth making personal sacrifices when you have a clear vision of where you want to go — and when that vision is aligned with your personal values and preserves your integrity.
